What is Perplexity Comet?
Perplexity Comet is an AI-native, Chromium-based web browser. It works like a conventional browser for tabs, websites, bookmarks and extensions, but places Perplexity search and a contextual Assistant inside the browsing experience. The side panel can answer questions about a current page, use selected tabs as context and, where your plan and permissions allow it, interact with websites on your behalf.
The practical difference is proximity. In the standard Perplexity app, you bring a question or file to Perplexity. In Comet, the assistant sits beside the page, inbox, calendar or web tool you are already using. That can reduce copying, tab switching and manual comparison, although it does not remove the need to verify sources or review consequential actions.
Where to download Perplexity Comet
Use Perplexity’s official Comet page, which detects or routes you to the appropriate version. The current product page lists four supported platform families.
Download safely
Open the official Comet page and choose the version for your device. Avoid unofficial installers or download mirrors.
Import selected data
On desktop, open Settings and choose “Import bookmarks and settings”. You can select items such as bookmarks, history and passwords instead of moving everything blindly.
Review privacy first
Check history, search, cookies, ad blocking, site permissions and connected services before making Comet your default browser or asking it to use personal context.
What can the Comet browser do?

Built-in ad blocking
Comet includes an ad blocker, with controls under Settings → Privacy → Ad block. Sites may still request that it is disabled before allowing access to their content.
Is Perplexity Comet free?
Comet is free to download. However, the current Perplexity plan table lists browser-agent queries only for paid subscriptions, with more capacity and control at higher tiers.

Choose the context
Open the relevant pages and reference only the tabs Comet needs. Narrow context usually produces a cleaner answer and shares less unrelated information.
State the task and limits
Ask for a specific output: a comparison table, eligibility checklist or draft. For actions, specify “do not submit, send or pay” unless you genuinely want that step.
Approve access deliberately
Comet may need permission to view a site or control browser elements. Grant the minimum access required, especially around email, financial services and account settings.
Verify the result
Check extracted details against the source pages, inspect form fields and confirm dates, recipients, totals or claims before any irreversible action.
Comet vs a regular browser vs the Perplexity app
Comet is not automatically the best place for every task. Match the interface to the amount of live web context and action you need.
Practical ways to use Comet for research and outreach
Comet is strongest as a research and preparation layer. Use it to reduce manual comparison while keeping human judgement over targeting, claims and communication.
Assess publisher fit
Open a publication’s homepage, categories, contributor page and recent articles. Ask Comet to summarise audience, recurring themes and evidence of genuine editorial standards.
Extract submission rules
Compare contributor guidelines with a media kit or contact page. Turn scattered requirements into a checklist covering length, links, originality, assets and author information.
Find an editorial gap
Review recent coverage around a topic and ask for angles the site has not addressed well. Confirm the gap with on-site search before turning it into a pitch.
Compare primary sources
Keep official reports, product documentation and regulator pages open together. Ask Comet to map each factual claim to a specific source rather than relying on a loose summary.
Prepare a content brief

Is the Perplexity Comet browser safe?
Comet includes meaningful privacy controls, but an AI browser can see more context when you ask it to act. Safety depends on understanding what stays local, what a request sends for processing and which permissions you grant.
Local browser data
Perplexity says browsing URLs, searches, cookies, open tabs and site permissions are stored locally by default. Passwords and payment details are kept in the device’s secure vault rather than on Perplexity’s servers.

Personal searches and actions
When you ask a personal question or request an action, Comet may send relevant context—such as the current tab or relevant history—to Perplexity so it can complete the task. Browsing data may also be used to fulfil searches and agentic actions.
Connected services such as email or calendar require opt-in access that can be revoked in Perplexity settings.
Enterprise protections
With an Enterprise account, Perplexity says traffic is not logged or used to train models. Admins can manage more than 500 Chromium policies, deploy through MDM and set each domain to Browser Control, Read Only or No Access.
Those controls can support a safer organisational rollout, but they still need to be configured and tested against internal policy.
Prompt-injection risk
A web page can contain misleading instructions intended to influence an agent. Perplexity describes a defence-in-depth design, yet no automated action deserves blind trust. Restrict access on sensitive domains and inspect any action involving money, credentials, publishing or external communication.
What to check when Comet is not working as expected
Start with the browser, plan and permission layer before assuming the Assistant has failed.
The Assistant cannot take action
Check whether your plan includes browser-agent queries, whether you have reached an allowance and whether browser control is permitted for that site. Enterprise domain policies may override general settings.
An imported extension is missing
Bookmarks, history and passwords can be imported, but Chrome extensions need to be installed again. Open the extension store, reinstall the required item and configure it from scratch.
Autofill does not work on Mac
If keychain access was denied, saved-password autofill may be unavailable. Review the macOS prompt and your security preferences rather than repeatedly entering credentials into an unexpected dialog.
The page answer looks incomplete
Point Comet to the exact tab, specify the fields you need and ask it to mark missing evidence. For complex synthesis across many sources, move the question into Research mode.

Yes. Perplexity’s current official Comet page lists Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. Desktop deployment and enterprise policy documentation may cover only macOS and Windows, so do not assume every desktop control exists on mobile.
Can Comet use Chrome extensions?
Perplexity says Comet is compatible with most Chrome extensions. Extensions must be reinstalled and configured; their existing Chrome extension data is not imported automatically.
Does Comet send my full browser history to Perplexity?
